In France, hotels can be classified in six star categories. The French Ministry of Tourism has determined which criteria hotels have to meet to belong to a specific category. These are summarised in the “Classement des hôtels et résidences de tourisme”. In France, more than 17.500 hotels are classified with the help of the French hotel classification.
The different categories:
1 Stars => confort moyen
2 Stars => bon confort
3 Stars => grand confort
4 Stars => trés grand confort
5 Stars => haut de gamme
Hotels with 1 Star => confort moyen
The minimum size for a single room is 8 m2 and for a double room 9 m2. A minimum of 50 % of the rooms has an own bath- and shower possibility. Counting 5 or more stories, the hotel will have an elevator available.
Hotels with 2 Stars => bon confort
In a two star hotel the minimum size of a single room will be 8 m2 and of a double room 9 m2. These hotels have, like the 1 star hotels, a minimum of 7 rooms of which at least 75% has a own bath- and shower possibility. When the hotel is more than 4 floors high it will have an elevator.
Hotels with 3 Stars => grand confort
The minimum size of a single room will be 11,5 m2 and of a double room 13,5 m2. All of the hotelrooms have an own bath- and shower possibility. When the hotel has more than three floors it will have an elevator. Guests have the possibility to enjoy a breakfast in their room. The employees of the hotel will speak several languages.
Hotels with 4 Stars => trés grand confort
The minimum size of a single room will be 14 m2 and for the double rooms 16 m2. The hotels with 4 stars will have an own bath- and shower possibility and the common areas measure at least 70 m2 in total. The hotel will have an elevator when it has 2 floors or more. In addition, the hotel personnel speaks English and at least two other foreign languages.
Hotels with 5 Stars => haut de gamme
The minimum size of a single room will be 20 m2 and a double room 24 m2, including the obligatory sanitary facilities. 90 m2 of common areas is available at least. The hotel will have an elevator when it has 2 floors or more. In addition, the hotel personnel speaks English and at least two other foreign languages.
