In the Netherlands, as well as in many other countries, hotels are classified in five categories (one to five stars). The Dutch Hotel Classification (NHC) has decided the norms for these five categories. More than 2200 hotels in the Netherlands are classified with the help of this classification system.
General norms apply for all 5 categories. These norms differ per category. If a hotel has a specific number of stars, the hotel has to meet the basic criteria of that category.
Besides the general norms, there are voluntary alternative norms. With these alternative norms a business hotel can distinghuishes itself from a family hotel. For instance, you can expect internet access to be more likely in business hotels than in other hotels. Because of the alternative norms it is possible that hotels with the same number of stars have different quality norms.
Other examples of alternative norms are:
- All rooms have individually adjustable airconditioning
- Guest lockers in each room
- Beauty Salon
- Acceptance of at least two different credit cards
- Room Service
What is the purpose of hotel stars?
